Hard Polymer Strops – Early Release

We're excited to introduce our new hard polymer strops—designed for ultra-fine polishing beyond your final stone grit. Testing is still in the early stages, but initial results have been very promising.

These strops are significantly firmer than vegetable-tanned cow leather, helping to virtually eliminate any unintended convexing of the apex. Despite their firmness, they remain soft enough not to damage or chip delicate ceramic edges. They’re highly wear-resistant, easy to clean, and unlike leather or wood, they don’t absorb water or abrasives.

Each strop is mounted on the same aluminum base as the Diamond Matrix stones and is finished to the same thickness for seamless integration into your sharpening setup. Because the polymer is non-absorbent and non-abrasive, you will need to apply your preferred abrasive compound before each use. While not holding the abrasives like leather or wood is somewhat inconvenient, the easy cleanup allows you to use a single strop for a wide range of abrasive sizes.

Just like with traditional strops, only pull strokes should be used—no exceptions. This ensures the edge remains properly aligned and prevents any potential damage to the strop or your blade.

Please note: the resin used in these strops is sensitive to oils, chemicals, and UV exposure. It may darken over time if exposed to direct sunlight. We recommend cleaning your strop thoroughly after each use and avoiding long-term storage with oil-based or chemical compounds applied. Soap and water work well for cleanup, as does rubbing alcohol on a paper towel.

While we do our best to ensure every strop is free of voids or minor imperfections, some cosmetic flaws may be present. In our experience so far, these do not affect performance in any way.

Stay tuned as we continue testing and refining this product—your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

    Polymer Strop

Posted by Marvin Cross on Jun 23rd 2025

I sharpened a brand-new Miyabi Nakiri with SG2 steel. I tested the sharpness on my Bess sharpness tester and it tested at 157, which is what a utility razor blade tests at. I sharpened the knife with the full range of Diamond Matrix stones up to 4,000 grit. The knife then tested at 119. I finished with the polymer strop and Luxor .1 micron stick polish. I used about 10 pull strokes on every part of the bevels on both sides of the knife. The sharpness tester showed 78. I have never been able to get a knife this sharp. I am sold.

    Hard Strop

Hands down the best strop I ever used. I used them when CGSW released them about a year ago in the 1X4 format and always wanted the 1X6 to go along with the diamond matrix stones I have. They leave a mirror polish that far exceeded the best leather stop I have used. They are also super easy to care for just wash them and they are good to go. The only down side is they do require slightly more product over the long term, but in my opinion it is well worth the trade off. I highly recommend this product.
